The LHC optical private network

🔻 Secret¹ communications² from CIA headquarters via the CERN supercomputer known as "Tier 0" of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid¹ (WLCG)² are apparently being conducted via the LHC Optical Private Network¹ (LHCOPN)². Data is reportedly sent³ from CERN via the LHCOPN to 11 academic "Tier 1" institutions in Asia, Europe, and North America via dedicated 10 Gbps¹ links².

Commands are sent from CIA headquarters under Lake Geneva to 11 CIA¹ substations² around the world, one of which is located in Langley, Virginia. More than 150 "Tier 2" institutions are then linked to the CIA's 11 "Tier 1" institutions, a network of substations that also serve as Research and Education Network (NREN) centers.
