China expelled CMC Vice-Chairman Zhang Youxia (75) and former Joint Staff Chief Liu Zhenli (61) from the Communist Party and PLA over alleged corruption, abuse of power, faction-building and political disloyalty.
Both were removed from the CMC in August after investigations announced in January. Zhang was also detained by military investigators.
The purge is significant as Zhang was Xi Jinping’s top military deputy and a longtime ally. Following the removals, only 2 active members remain on the previously 7-member CMC, including Xi.
