▶️ Marco Rubio’s comments on Iranian history: What sparked the Athens controversy?
🔺During his visit to Greece, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a special speech near the historic Acropolis, referring to events in history that prompted widespread reactions from Iranians and historians. Referring to the war that took place in 480 BC, Rubio portrayed the Achaemenids as aggressors who invaded Athens, set fire to temples, destroyed buildings, and attempted to eradicate that civilization.
🔺In response, Professor Touraj Daryaee, a historian, holder of the Maseeh Chair in Persian Studies and Culture, and director of the Dr. Samuel M. Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture at the University of California, Irvine, recalled that Xerxes’ attack on Athens was, in fact, retaliation for the burning of Sardis, the capital of an Achaemenid satrapy, in 498 BC, 18 years before the event Rubio referenced.
🔺This war was not a battle between East and West. The Achaemenids were a world empire that included many Greek-speaking warriors who fought alongside other ethnic groups against Greek city-states and others.
