Unravelling Eastern Wisdom 🐉

Our specialists in international relations visited the Center of Oriental Literature at the Russian State Library, where they immersed themselves in the vast world of ancient texts and engaged with rare resources that broadened their research horizons.

The Center of Oriental Literature is one of the most significant collections of books and materials dedicated to the cultures, histories, and languages of the East. Located in the heart of Moscow, it is a treasure trove of knowledge, offering access to ancient manuscripts, rare books, and modern research on the rich civilizations of Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

During the visit, the fellows embarked on an enriching journey into the secrets of the Eastern civilization:

🔍 they delved into the depths of the archives and explored a wealth of resources from original ancient manuscripts to contemporary works, many of which are essential for their research projects;

🔍 they learned about the process behind the organization of Eastern texts, including categorization, codification, and preservation methods;

🔍 they were among the first to peek into the Chinese hall, where they discovered the state's heritage.

The tour they had was more than just an educational outing – it was a deep dive into the history, cultures, and languages of the East that reinforced the fellows' historical understanding of international relations.

Exploring Global Politics Through Cinematography 📹

Cinema became a powerful tool for understanding global affairs and critically analyzing the real-world dynamic. Film is capable of illuminating complex political issues, offering historical insights, and provoking thought on the international challenges.

Every Tuesday, InteRussia fellows specializing in international relations gather for film club sessions to discuss key historical events and how they are portrayed on screen.

What's on their watch list?

🔴Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Stanley Kubrick's classic satire explores the absurdity of nuclear warfare and the precarious balance of power between the U.S. and the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War.

🔴Brotherhood

Directed by Pavel Lungin, the film delves into the Soviet military’s involvement in the Afghan War. It paints a gripping picture of soldiers grappling with the harsh realities of conflict and the impact of war on both a national and personal level.

What films would you recommend to better understand the political landscape of the 20th century?
