After meeting representatives of the Russian Theatre Union, InteRussia fellows continued their introduction to its work at “Heritage. Theatre. Greats” — the largest exhibition project in the Union’s history, created to mark its 150th anniversary.
Built as a journey through the backstage world, the exhibition begins where audiences rarely enter — at the stage door. Across 17 thematic sections, the fellows discovered how a performance comes to life long before the curtain rises.
They explored:
⭕️ the work of theatre workshops — from costume, make-up, props, and scenery to lighting, sound, and stage machinery;
⭕️ original costumes, sets, props, and other exhibits from more than 100 theatres across Russia;
⭕️ 150 years of Russia’s theatre community, its legendary figures, theatre families, and traditions passed from one generation to another.
The route eventually leads visitors from backstage onto the stage itself — offering a chance to see theatre not only through the eyes of an actor, but through those of the many professionals whose work usually remains hidden from the audience.
The InteRussia Fellowship in Theatre Arts is implemented by Mezhdunarodniki Autonomous Non-Profit Organisation in cooperation with the Gorchakov Fund, GITIS and TV BRICS International Media Network. The programme is implemented as part of Rossotrudnichestvo’s flagship New Generation initiative with grant support from the Presidential Grants Foundation.
