Portugal’s president has now signed the amendments to the nationality law, meaning the new naturalization timelines will come into force once the law is officially published.

Here are the key updates:
• 7 years to citizenship for EU citizens and nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries (CPLP), including São Tomé and Príncipe
• 10 years for all other applicants
• The residency countdown now starts from the date the first residence permit is issued — not from the application date

⏱️Portugal was previously considered one of the fastest pathways to EU citizenship through naturalization. Under the new law, long-term planning for residents and investors becomes significantly more important.
