🇵🇹 Portuguese citizenship: what is changing?
Portugal continues to debate reforms to its citizenship law. Recently, the Constitutional Court reviewed the proposed amendments and rejected several measures, bringing more clarity to applicants.
📌 What is likely to remain unchanged:
1️⃣ The minimum residence period for naturalization will increase from 5 to 10 years for third-country nationals (non-EU / non-CPLP).
2️⃣ Already submitted citizenship applications will continue to be assessed under the previous rules, without retroactive application.

✔️ Why this matters:
As a result, only a limited number of EU countries will still offer a path from residence to citizenship within 5 years, such as Luxembourg.
Despite longer timelines, the route to Portuguese citizenship through investment remains legally protected, predictable, and achievable with proper planning. A well-structured residency, tax, and integration strategy is now more important than ever.
