Meta has warned it may shut down Facebook and Instagram in Nigeria due to a $220 million fine and what it calls “unrealistic” regulatory demands. The fine stems from a lengthy investigation into data privacy violations by Nigeria’s FCCPC and NDPC.

Meta, which is appealing the decision, criticized the NDPC’s interpretation of data laws and objected to requirements like pre-approving data transfers and producing educational content. While WhatsApp wasn’t included in the court filing, Meta says the conditions could make continued operation in Nigeria unfeasible.
