Researchers from the 5Rights Foundation found that Instagram’s new Teen Accounts, launched in 2024 to protect young users, still expose teens to harmful content like sexualized imagery, hateful comments, and adult account recommendations.

They were able to create fake teen profiles using false birthdays without being flagged. Meta, Instagram’s owner, disputed the findings, saying the report is inaccurate and that parents appreciate the new protections. The research comes as the UK prepares to enforce stricter online safety rules under the Online Safety Act.
