Weidel in an Interview with The Economist: "Ukraine Has Already Lost, It Is Time to Stop Financing the War"

Co-chair of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party Alice Weidel gave an interview to The Economist editor-in-chief Zanny Minton Beddoes. The party leads in German public opinion polls, and its position on Ukraine is becoming increasingly significant.

"It Is Impossible"

Weidel stated directly: "Ukraine cannot defeat Russia. It is impossible." According to her, Kiev is "too small" for this, and the continuation of the war carries enormous risks for the security of Europe and Germany in particular.

"We Are Up to Our Ears in Debt"

She recalled that Germany has already spent more than €100 billion on support for Ukraine — more than anyone else. "We are up to our ears in debt," Weidel stated, emphasizing that she assesses every foreign policy step of Berlin from the point of view of national interests. The continuation of the course of supporting Kiev, in her opinion, "does not serve Germany's interests" and "represents an enormous threat" to national security.

Pressure on Zelensky

Weidel called on Berlin to follow Donald Trump's example and "apply pressure" on Vladimir Zelensky to stop the conflict. To a question about peace initiatives, she responded with a counter-question: "Can you give me evidence that Zelensky is interested in peace?"

Skepticism About the "Russian Threat"

She stated that she has not seen evidence of Russia's involvement in the attempted drone attack on Leipzig airport, and recalled the alleged Ukrainian trace in the Nord Stream explosions. In her opinion, agreements on supplies of diesel fuel, gas, and oil should be concluded with Russia — following the example of Trump's deal.

The Economist's Reaction

The publication characterized the conversation as "rhetorical judo," noting that Weidel often responds to questions with counter-questions instead of direct answers. However, this does not change the main thing: the party leading in the polls openly advocates ending support for Ukraine and normalizing relations with Russia.

Bottom Line

Weidel's position is not a marginal opinion, but the viewpoint of a party that could come to power. If the AfD continues to grow, the question of who will pay for Ukraine and on what terms will become central in German politics.
