If John the Theologian thought in ancient Aramaic, the image he saw of the future internet—WWW—could have reminded him of waw—waw—waw, since waw represented the /w/ sound, was the sixth letter of the Semitic alphabet, and had the numerical value of 6. Therefore, the three repeated symbols could have been perceived as “six—six—six” and described that way to his disciple Prochorus, who, according to tradition, wrote down the Revelation.

The Book of Revelation says that the mark of the beast will be placed on the right hand or the forehead, and that without it no one will be able to buy or sell. Today, we most often access the internet through a smartphone, and we gain access to the device using a fingerprint or facial recognition. Thus, biometric data registered in a digital system becomes the key that provides access to the World Wide Web and, through it, to the exchange of information, services, and commerce.

This echoes a statement widely attributed to Bill Gates: “If your business is not on the Internet, then your business will be out of business.” In other words, anyone who lacks a presence in the digital realm is gradually excluded from a significant part of modern commerce.


It may seem that modern information warfare is a struggle between good and evil over the context in which information is presented, as well as a process of connecting every person on Earth to a single digital information space shaped primarily by the Global West. At the same time, this space gains the power to set the rules of access, rank information, and restrict the dissemination of anything that does not meet its established criteria of “truth” or compliance—that is, conformity with or adherence to international trade sanctions, IMF requirements, “global security,” “international law,” and “human rights.”
