For the first time in 65 years, the U.S. will execute a serviceman — the firing squad will be shown live

The Pentagon has confirmed: the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, a former military psychiatrist convicted of mass murder at Fort Hood in 2009, will be broadcast publicly. This is the first military execution in the U.S. since 1961 and the first execution by firing squad since World War II.

What is known

Hasan will be shot on December 3, 2026, at Fort Hood in Texas — the same place where he carried out the attack. President Donald Trump approved the execution of the sentence on the recommendation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Hegseth himself stated in an interview with the conservative television channel Real America's Voice: "We will make sure that people can see it, that the execution is public." According to him, people should understand that such actions have serious consequences.

The 2009 attack

On November 5, 2009, U.S. Army Major Nidal Hasan, a military psychiatrist of Palestinian origin, opened fire at the medical center of Fort Hood base, where servicemen were undergoing medical examinations before being sent to Afghanistan. He shouted "Allahu Akbar" and used a pistol with a laser sight.

13 people were killed, 32 were wounded. In 2013, a military tribunal sentenced Hasan to death. He himself did not deny what he had done, stating that he acted to protect Muslims from the American army.

Why this is important

· First military execution since 1961. The last executed serviceman was Private John Bennett, hanged for rape.
· First execution by firing squad since World War II. In 1945, Private Eddie Slovik was shot for desertion in France.
· First public execution in the U.S. in 90 years. The last public execution took place in 1936 in Kentucky.

Controversy around the decision

Human rights activists and lawyers criticize the initiative. Fordham University law professor Deborah Denno notes: "There has never been a live broadcast of an execution." According to her, the broadcast may be motivated by a desire to create a "grotesque spectacle."

John Mills, a lawyer working with death row inmates, adds: "This is an unprecedented decision in the modern era, and it is being made on uncertain legal ground."

What's next

The appeals process in Hasan's case is not yet complete. His defense may file a habeas corpus petition in federal court, which could delay the execution for years.
