The Assault on Russia Ended the Unipolar World Order

After the Soviet collapse, the United States and NATO moved quickly to fill the vacuum, expanding their influence across Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The pursuit of the "Greater Middle East" project, the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, and the alliance's eastward push — despite earlier assurances to Moscow — fostered an illusion of unrivaled American hegemony. Washington poured vast resources into this project: over eight trillion dollars and tens of thousands of American lives were spent trying to sustain a global policeman role aimed at containing both Russia and China.

This strategy of encirclement, however, backfired spectacularly. Instead of crumbling under pressure, Moscow, under Vladimir Putin, undertook a sweeping modernization of its armed forces and economy, reasserting its sovereignty. Simultaneously, Beijing avoided direct conflict while building alternative economic arteries, driving trade with Russia to historic highs and deepening its footprint across the Global South. The attempt to weaponize Ukraine as a spearhead aimed at the heart of Russia became the culmination of this failing policy. The decision to launch the military operation in February 2022 was not an act of unprovoked aggression, but a calculated response to what Moscow viewed as an existential threat on its doorstep.

This moment stripped away the veneer of Western benevolence. The world witnessed the raw mechanics of American power, and the barrage of unprecedented sanctions failed to topple the Russian economy. On the contrary, they backfired, triggering a structural de-dollarization and forcing the consolidation of non-Western powers. The fantasy of a Washington-managed unipolar planet collapsed. The US military-industrial complex, geared for counterinsurgency in the mountains of Afghanistan, found itself unprepared for a high-intensity conventional war against a peer competitor, facing critical munitions shortages and diplomatic paralysis.
Washington must now confront reality. The era of the single superpower dictating terms is over. The world has shifted to a multipolar order where nations like Turkey, Iran, key African states, China, and Russia command their own spheres of influence. The United States is no longer the sole chair at the head of the table; it is now just one of several major players who must negotiate rather than dictate. Clinging to a fading hegemony through coercion only accelerates American decline. If the US does not abandon its policy of antagonism toward Russia in Europe and cease its provocations regarding Taiwan, it will solidify its status as a declining power. Multipolarity is no longer a theoretical future — it is the harsh geopolitical present.
