Oreshek Fortress, Leningrad Region ⚔️
 
A wooden fortress was founded by Novgorodians at the source of the Neva River in 1323 to defend their lands from the Swedes. The first peace treaty was signed here.
 
Over its 700-year history, the fortress has had many names: the Swedes called it Notenburg, it was known as Orekhov Town, Peter the Great renamed it Shlisselburg—"Key City"—and today it's known as Oreshek.
 
After touring the fortress, its bastions, and towers, it's especially pleasant to gaze out at the endless expanse of Lake Ladoga.
