Subject: 2024 Babuska Prize awarded


In December 2024, the Czech Society for Mechanics and the Union of
Czech Mathematicians and Physicists awarded for the thirty-first time
the I. Babuska Prize for the best work in computational mechanics and
computational mathematics submitted by students and young
scientists. The Prize was established in 1994 by an outstanding Czech
mathematician Ivo Babuska (1926- -2023) who worked mostly in the
United States. The Prize winner for 2024 is Dr Jiri Minarcik from the
Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering of the Czech
Technical University in Prague. The work honored is his PhD thesis
Properties and applications of geometric flows.

The second position and a diploma of honor belongs to Dr Eda Oktay
from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University in
Prague who presented her PhD thesis Mixed-precision computation in
numerical linear algebra. The third position was awarded to Dr Jana
Zakova who was delivered a diploma of honor for her PhD thesis The
core problem---analysis, properties and behaviour defended at the
Faculty of Science, Humanities and Education of the Technical
University of Liberec.

Further diplomas of honor were delivered to MS theses. The first
position in this category was taken by Anna Kovarnova from the Faculty
of Chemical Engineering of the University of Chemistry and Technology
in Prague. The second was Petra Helesicova from the Faculty of
Mechanical Engineering of the Brno Technical University and the third
position belongs to Ivana Reruchova from the same faculty.
