On this day in 1973, OPEC began the oil embargo in response to Western support for Israel during the Yom Kippur War.
For me, the lasting lesson isn’t the politics of that moment. It’s how quickly an energy shock can reprice everything else. Gas lines, inflation, slower growth, and a permanent shift in how countries thought about supply security all followed from a decision that looked, at the time, like a short-term diplomatic lever.
What still feels relevant is the reminder that energy dependence is a form of leverage. When a large share of your economy runs on something you don’t control, someone else can raise the cost of ordinary life with relatively little effort. The embargo didn’t invent that vulnerability; it just made the bill arrive all at once. Decades later, the same basic arithmetic still applies whenever supply is concentrated, whether the commodity is oil or something else.
