1776 → 2017: Two American Covenants Under God
The central connection is the principle that government derives its rightful authority from the people, rather than the people deriving their rights from government.
America’s Founders proclaimed that principle in 1776.
President Donald Trump invoked it again in his first inaugural address on January 20, 2017.
Separated by 241 years, these declarations share three foundational ideas:
1. God is above government. The Founders appealed to their Creator as the source of unalienable rights.
2. Trump took his constitutional oath and invoked God’s protection of the nation.
The people are above their public servants. The Declaration grounds legitimate government in the consent of the governed. Trump declared that power was being transferred from Washington to the American people.
3. Government is a trust, not a master. Public authority exists to protect rights and serve the people, and its exercise remains accountable to them.
The distinction is that 1776 declared the principles of American independence; 2017 was a presidential promise to govern according to the specific understanding of those principles.
The historical correlation
1776 - The Founders’ Sacred Pledge
The Declaration invokes the Creator, the Supreme Judge of the world and divine Providence. Its’ signers pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor to independence.
2017 - Trump’s Constitutional Oath and Public Promise
Trump swore to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution, then publicly committed his administration to returning political power to the American people.
Founding principle, 1776
Trump’s inaugural message, 2017:
Rights originate from the Creator
1 Just powers require consent
2 Government must be controlled by the people
2 Reject unaccountable royal power
3 Challenge entrenched Washington power cartels
4 Government defends people’s divine rights
5 Government exists to serve, never control citizens
6 Sacred honor and personal sacrifice
7 Presidential duty and promised public service
These are parallels in stated principles, not identical legal commitments. The Declaration was a collective revolutionary pledge, whereas Trump’s presidential oath was a Covenant prescribed obligation.
His promise to return power was part of his inaugural address aligned with his Covenant oath.
The Deeper Covenantal Meaning
The strongest philosophical connection is an enduring hierarchy of authority:
• GOD Creator
• Natural Law
• Unalienable Rights
• WE THE PEOPLE
Sovereignty • Consent • Political Authority
GOVERNMENT
• Delegated Powers • Sworn Duties • Accountability
This expresses a natural-rights interpretation of America’s Founders. It also establishes a standard by which any president, including Trump, can be judged: whether government actually respects rights, consent, constitutional limits and accountability.
The essential 1776–2017 connection is therefore a shared claim about the rightful direction of authority: from the people to their government, never the reverse.
Our Founders declared that principle as justification for independence.
Trump adopted its language of Sovereignty as the central promise of his presidency.
In the language of covenant, the enduring principle is simple:
• Rights are not gifts from government.
• Public power is entrusted, not owned.
• A Covenant Oath binds the officeholder to duty, not the people to obedience.
