MASSIVE EARTH-FACING CORONAL HOLES — GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH
Multiple enormous coronal holes are drawing attention on the Earth-facing side of the Sun, stretching across its northern and southern hemispheres. These dark regions in the Sun’s outer atmosphere allow high-speed solar wind to escape into space—and Earth could feel the effects.
The next 72 hours are a period to watch. NOAA forecasts minor to moderate geomagnetic storms on October 11–12, driven primarily by incoming coronal mass ejections, with possible additional influence from coronal-hole solar wind streams.
When these streams interact with Earth’s magnetic field, they can intensify auroras and potentially affect satellite operations and navigation accuracy. The strength of the disturbance depends on the arriving solar wind and its magnetic orientation—not simply the size of the coronal holes.
An impressive solar setup worth watching closely as conditions develop.
