NEW THREAT EMERGES AFTER WILDFIRES SCORCH ITALY’S AMALFI COAST
The fire may be fading, but the danger is shifting.
Wildfires ripped across the steep hillsides of Italy’s Amalfi and Sorrento coasts, burning through vegetation near communities and forcing some residents from their homes.
Now heavy rain and thunderstorms are moving over those same fire-scarred slopes.
Officials are warning that the burned terrain could become vulnerable to landslides and falling rocks as rain pours onto hillsides recently stripped by fire.
Along a coastline known for its towering cliffs and steep mountain roads, that creates an entirely new threat.
First fire tore across the hillsides. Now water could send them moving.
