ANAK KRAKATAU ERUPTS ASH BLASTS NEARLY 50,000 FEET INTO THE SKY
Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau has produced a powerful explosive eruption, sending volcanic ash soaring to around 15 kilometers (48,000 feet) above sea level.
The eruption rapidly intensified Friday night, with satellite observations and Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre reports tracking the massive ash cloud as it moved westward.
Aviation authorities have issued ash advisories because volcanic ash at these extreme altitudes can pose a serious hazard to aircraft.
And this is what makes the eruption especially striking…
The ash column reached almost 50,000 feet high enough to enter the upper atmosphere where aircraft routinely operate.
Indonesia’s volcano monitoring agencies are continuing to watch Anak Krakatau closely.
