GRAND CANYON DISASTER LEAVES A TRAIL OF DESTRUCTION
The true scale of the destruction inside the Grand Canyon is becoming much clearer.
Two people are now confirmed dead.
82 people were evacuated.
And one permitted visitor remains unaccounted for.
But deep inside the canyon, the damage is extensive.
Nearly all of the footbridges spanning Bright Angel Creek were destroyed, while preliminary assessments indicate roughly 40% of the Transcanyon Waterline was damaged or destroyed.
Officials believe miles of that critical pipeline could be gone.
With the waterline out of operation, the South Rim is relying on roughly two weeks of stored water, and overnight lodging inside Grand Canyon National Park has been shut down.
Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground and the North Kaibab Trail remain closed as the park begins dealing with damage that could take significant time to repair.
