Indian pilot Capt. Smit Machchhar, who was seriously wounded during Wednesday’s attempted hijacking of flydubai Flight FZ1073 en route to Israel, was reported in stable condition Wednesday night at a hospital in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Machchhar as a hero, saying his courage “helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy.”
