Do you know what a "city within a city" looks like? A city with its own laws, its own theater, and even its own ghosts? Welcome to Millionka — the legendary Chinese Quarter in the heart of Vladivostok.
Just imagine: a labyrinth of narrow passages, courtyard-wells, arches, and stairs that lead to who knows where. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, thousands of Chinese people, traders, and craftsmen flocked here.
Inside this so called ant colony, its own life was boiling: Chinese shops and stalls, bathhouses, and small restaurants. Right there, on Admiral Fokin Street, stood the first theater in Vladivostok. It was opened by Mary Cooper, a Chinese woman and the wife of an American merchant, and in 1873, "Hamlet" was performed there.
In the 1930s, the quarter was cleared out, and Millionka faded into the shadows. But today, it is experiencing a rebirth. Cozy cafes, art spaces, and workshops are opening in the old red-brick buildings.
📍 How to find it: the center of Vladivostok, between Svetlanskaya, Pogranichnaya, Aleutskaya, and Fontannaya streets. Landmark — the pedestrian Admiral Fokin Street. Many people pass by and don't even notice the arch behind which a whole historical layer is hidden.
📸 Advice: have a look into every alleyway (they are called "ochkurki" here, which means "ties" or "strings") — the most interesting courtyards are hidden from view.
