IELTS with Stacy Alexandrova A Slippery Slope of Paraphrasing 💭 "Won't my score go down if I don't paraphrase 'this word'?" is one of the most common questions I hear from students. But I believe the question they should ask themselves instead is: "Won't my score go down IF I PARAPHRASE…
As the retirement age varies in different countries, I don't think that using "retired people" instead of "65-year-olds" is a good idea. Instead, you could use:

🟠senior citizens
🟠individuals of that age
🟠this demographic
🟠those aged 65
🟠those in their mid-60s
🟠people around retirement age

A Slippery Slope of Paraphrasing 💭

"Won't my score go down if I don't paraphrase 'this word'?" is one of the most common questions I hear from students. But I believe the question they should ask themselves instead is: "Won't my score go down IF I PARAPHRASE this word?"

Let me give you an example. Just the other day, I gave one of my students a recent exam essay topic: "Training 65 year olds to use computers would be a good use of government money. To what extent do you agree or disagree?"

Honestly, I was surprised to see this question myself because usually IELTS essay topics are less specific - it's more common to get questions about old people, young people or children, not people of a precise age.

Anyway, this is what the student wrote in the first body paragraph:

"Firstly, helping retired people to learn new tech skills and computer literacy can increase their life expectancy. Computer skills help 65-years-old people to communicate with each other via social media, better understand the younger generation and adapt to the new technological era. For instance, retired people who know how to use computers find their old friends via Facebook or X and have more social activities that create motivation for living."

Do you believe the use of "retired people" instead of "65-year-olds" justified? Share your thoughts in the comment section ⬇️

"Stacy, where are you?" 🤔

I'm here, guys 😁 Grateful to each and every one of you who's still following the blog. A lot has happened over these months:

🟠 I've been snowed under with work – I don't think there will be any slots available until August. That said, I'm thinking about new projects for September (the speaking club will be back).
🟠 I've taken an exam in Chinese and passed it 🥳
🟠I've taken up a brand-new sport 💪
🟠I'm getting ready to move to another apartment.
🟠I've just been soaking up the sunshine and enjoying lush summer greenery ☀️

How have you been?☺️

Put one of the following reactions:
💅 - chilling
🤪 - working hard
