Finally, in this setting, photograph a day insect in a relatively dark room, and a night insect in bright daylight. It is surprising how often (though not always) even the liveliest day insect can easily be handled and "posed" in dim light, and how docile night insects are in daylight. As long as the setting (plants, grass, flowers, dead leaves, bark, sand, gravel, or rocks) duplicates in detail the conditions under which the insect lives—a task which is usually not difficult to achieve since the area to be photographed is generally only inches wide and deep pictures of live insects which are neither chilled nor anesthetized, taken in this manner, are not "fakes" but valid documents of nature which can in no way be distinguished from photographs taken outdoors —except that on the average they are better and more informative than pictures taken on location under less favorable conditions.
