🟠 Global Warming on Mars!

The average temperature on Mars is about minus 60 degrees Celsius. With its thin atmosphere, solar heat on the Red Planet's surface readily escapes into space. Martian dust further lowers daytime temperatures and weakens infrared solar radiation.

But, there might be ways to modify the Martian environment, making it more suitable for life. Scientists at the University of Chicago have proposed a revolutionary way to bring global warming to Mars!

👋 The Idea

To "warm" Mars, scientists propose using specially designed particles like "nanorods" made of aluminum and iron, which are abundant on the planet. The idea is continuously releasing this "dust" into the Martian atmosphere at 30 liters per second for years. These "nanorods" will retain heat and scatter sunlight towards the surface, increasing the greenhouse effect.

Scientists estimate the average daily temperature could rise by 28 degrees Celsius in 10 years. It would trigger the melting of glaciers and make Mars more suitable for developing microorganisms.

We propose to show that the idea of warming Mars isn't impossible. We hope that our finding encourages the broader scientific community, and the public, to explore this intriguing idea.

🚀 Potential

Scientists have calculated that this method might be at least 5,000 times more efficient than previous global warming proposals, which included importing large amounts of gases from Earth or mining rare Martian resources.

The effect could show in just a few months. At the same time, the warming is reversible and will stop in a few years if the particles' emission is turned off.

Although the warming will not immediately make Mars suitable for humans, it will help render the environment more compatible with life. Rising temperatures would create conditions for microbes and food crops that could gradually add oxygen to the atmosphere.
