The King of Amendments: Mushroom Compost
Of all the amendments you can find out there, probably the most economic and useful one may be mushroom compost, especially if you are handling a larger planting area. You can buy it from most landscaping companies.
Mushroom compost is the waste of the mushroom industry. Mushroom growers buy agricultural byproducts (manure, hay, hulls, dried blood, brewer's grain) to make the growing medium for mushrooms, and at some point, when they determine that the growing medium is exhausted, they sell it off to landscapers.
However, this medium is still rich with nutrients and soil-building properties at a great price.
And, most importantly, it is already inoculated with fungi, which will bring your garden to new levels of prosperity.
It's definitely worth looking into. My most favorite and successful garden, which was also my first serious one, was amended with mushroom compost and some manure. It made for an excellent experience, and I'd love for you to try it.
