To Prevent Blisters
This is quite an old trick that's mostly passed down from the older generation, but it also circulates historical reenactment communities.
Get some pantyhose, and cut the feet off for pantyhose sock liners. The rest can be used for, I don't know, other weirdo survival stuff.
These thin liners would then be covered by standard wool socks.
The reason for doing this is to create a a friction buffer in-between your foot, the sock, and the boot. As your feet absorb the shock of walking, the force of friction is simply slipped away, not met with the brutal force of your heel and big toe.
This prevents blisters and foot fatigue. It also helps with sweat.
My personal sock of choice is the Darn Tough brand. The heel and toe are reinforced with a thicker weave, and they hug the arch nicely. Kind of pricey, but they really are tough. I've owned some pairs for years. I'm not as rough on socks as a man might be, though.
They are wool, of course.
