SOVIET SPADE

The classic spade is an absolute must to go along with your kit. In fact, I would say that this aspect of your gear is non-negotiable, just like the ruck.

Many people recommend folding spades. Most of those will fail you. Remember, moving parts break our hearts - more parts mean more failure. Very few folding spades will actually last, as they are prone to rust, corrosion, and other damage which makes them non-functional.

Here are the reasons why you need a solid Soviet Spade:

- Can drop the weight of the handle, make a new one later.
- Indestructible.
- USE IT AS AN AXE.
- USE IT AS A WEAPON.
- Essential for many bushcraft and tactical techniques.
- Historically used throughout Europe as the preferred survival spade.

Recommendations

#1 in our opinion: Cold Steel Spade

Head is 1/3 of the weight, but not good as an axe: Titanium Spade

Honorable Mention, probably the only folding spade the average person should ever consider, but the handle is plastic: Gerber Folding Spade
