Tangled Language
Or how not to let yourself be fooled
George Orwell, in his essay "Politics and the English Language," paid important attention to how confusing language distorts perceptions of reality. According to him, confused language means confused consciousness.
In this day and age, political speeches and texts represent a defense of what cannot be defended. Politicians manipulate our minds by using euphemisms like "appeasement" [bombing], "revenue optimization" [taxes] or "imposing constitutional order" [firings].
Such euphemisms are despicable not because they are a form of mind control, but because they are a form of lying. For example, "revenue optimization" has a much broader meaning than "taxes," and listeners naturally assume that if a politician meant taxes, he would have said so: "taxes."
One only has to draw attention to the euphemism, and it turns out that people are not so brainwashed that they do not understand the deception.
