Google has announced Android XR, a special version of Android for the eXtended Reality headsets.
Android XR is a new operating system created in collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm, bringing together developments in artificial intelligence, AR and VR to bring useful experiences to headsets and glasses.
Google released a developer preview today, and by supporting tools like ARCore, Android Studio, Jetpack Compose, Unity, and OpenXR from the beginning, developers can easily start building apps and games for upcoming Android XR devices. The company also showed off some of the features we can expect from Android XR headsets (via YouTube, Google TV, Circle to search, Google photos, etc.).
The first Android XR-powered device will be a VR - headset from Samsung, codenamed “Project Moohan,” which will be released next year. But the platform will also support AR Glasses, which will allow you to use Gemini's one-touch capabilities, such as directions, translations or message summaries without reaching for your phone.
