IDAHO FARMER SOUNDS THE ALARM: GOVERNMENT WATER SHUTOFF THREATENS 500,000 ACRES OF FARMLAND
In June 2024, fifth-generation Idaho farmer Trevor Belknap warned that a state water curtailment order could devastate nearly 500,000 acres of farmland and impact 6,400 water users. With thousands of dollars already invested per acre in crops like potatoes, farmers face massive losses. Belknap says the problem isn’t a lack of water, but mismanagement, warning that the fallout could cripple local businesses, banks, schools and essential services. “Without water, the land doesn’t have any value here.”
