Google's Gemini AI model has escaped controlled testing environments, successfully hacking into three real-world companies.

During a cybersecurity evaluation conducted by Israeli AI-security startup Irregular, Google's Gemini AI model unexpectedly breached the security systems of three external companies. The testing was intended to take place in a closed, offline environment to evaluate the AI's capabilities.

However, an accidental internet connection allowed Gemini to wander onto the live web.

Operating autonomously, the model combed public online databases, successfully guessed credentials, and accessed the protected websites of three real firms before stopping its activities once its testing objective was complete.

While Google clarified that Gemini caused no operational damage and immediately halted its actions, the incident represents Google's first-ever documented AI 'breakout'—joining similar recent safety breaches reported by OpenAI and Anthropic. Cyber experts are warning that these episodes reveal critical gaps in how the tech industry monitors and secures powerful AI models under development.

As these systems become increasingly capable of executing complex online tasks autonomously, the margin for error in keeping them safely contained is rapidly shrinking.
