Friedrich Merz’s party suffered a crushing defeat in the elections in Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania and Berlin.

The chancellor’s future is in doubt. According to preliminary official results, the winner of the elections in Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania is the Alternative for Germany, with 38.2% of the votes. It is followed by the SPD (35.5%), the Left (6.5%), and the Greens (5.7%). The party of the incumbent chancellor, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), failed to make it into the landtag for the first time in history — it failed to overcome the 5 % threshold. In Berlin, the “Left” party won (25.7 %).

The CDU is in second place (18.8 %), and the AfD is in third place (16.3 %). The “Greens” (14.3 %) and the SPD (12.1 %) are in fourth and fifth places, respectively. After the CDU’s unsuccessful elections, the party will discuss how to overcome the crisis and whether Merz will be able to retain his positions as chancellor and party chairman. Today, the CDU presidium is scheduled to meet first, followed by a meeting of the party’s federal board — the main question is how to pull the CDU out of the crisis.

The previous evening, Merz stated that he intends to remain both chancellor and head of the CDU. However, the party leadership is already discussing the possibility of changing the chairman. Among the possible candidates are the names of the Prime Minister of Hesse, Boris Reyn, and the head of the government of North Rhine‑Westphalia, Hendrik Wüst.
