🇰🇷🇺🇸 South Korea-US alliance frays at the edges amid trust issues

Intelligence restrictions, scaled-back military drills and disputes over investments are increasingly straining US-South Korea ties, reports Bloomberg.

👉 Tensions over intel cooperation date back to March, when Seoul’s unification minister publicly identified Kusong as the site of a North Korean uranium-enrichment facility.

The US reportedly viewed the disclosure as a breach of classified US intelligence and subsequently restricted some satellite-derived information on North Korea’s nuclear facilities.

South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung rejected the allegations as “absurd.”
South Korean officials insist that intelligence sharing on missiles, conventional forces and immediate military threats remains intact.

Other key flashpoints:

🔴 South Korean lawmaker Jung Chung-rae was forced to switch his planned US trip this month after his visa remained under review by the State Department and was not issued in time for a parliamentary audit of South Korean missions in the Americas.

🔴 Donald Trump ordered a scaling back of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield joint exercises in August from 11 days to five, with some live-fire and field training reduced or canceled. Trump cited costs, South Korea’s refusal to support US efforts against Iran, and claimed the drills sent an “inappropriate and hostile” signal to North Korea.

🔴 Investment disputes: Disagreements persist over a $350 billion investment framework, including projects involving Alaska LNG and nuclear reactors. South Korea has insisted on commercial viability and domestic legal requirements, with some projects remaining under review.
