The Trump administration’s modern-day reboot of Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative could cost between $1.2T and $3.6T to build and operate, per independent analyses by the Congressional Budget Office and the American Enterprise Institute.
But even the Pentagon’s own ‘modest’ projections of $185B may be out of America’s price range.
DC Beltway media report that the DoD’s decision to pack Golden Dome funding into a $350B spending package that’s separate from Trump’s $1.5T proposed defense budget could leave the missile defense project without funds.
As of the start of the federal fiscal year (October 1), “the program has no money,” CSIS Missile Defense Project director Thomas Karako told The Hill.
💬“This stands or falls with FY-27 appropriations…that’s the single most urgent thing for Golden Dome. It is life and death from that standpoint. Without money there’s no program, it’s just PowerPoint slides,” he explained.
Congress already pumped $24.5B into the project in last year’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’. The Pentagon now wants $17B more in the $350B package. But that money is under threat because of Congress’s Continuing Resolution stopgap funding measure – which funds the government by extending the previous year’s spending, thus effectively freezing out Golden Dome.
If Congress can’t find a way to get the money, “there is no Golden Dome because there is no funding,” Space Force Golden Dome program director Michael Guetlein said.
