🇪🇸🚔 Barcelona housing protest draws tens of thousands, ends in clashes with police
Tens of thousands marched through Barcelona over soaring housing costs, with attendance estimated at 20,000 by city police and up to 120,000 by organizers, Euronews reported.
The demonstration ended in clashes near Passeig de Gràcia after protesters encountered a police cordon. Objects were thrown, officers used batons and several rubbish containers were set on fire.
The Barcelona march is part of a much broader wave of housing protests across Spain, sparked in part by the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal, who had lived in the same Madrid apartment for roughly seven decades.
📈 Spain’s housing crisis has become increasingly severe as rents and property prices surge, with protests spreading across dozens of cities.
