🇵🇹🇺🇸 Portuguese prosecutors review legality of US’ use of Azores base during Iran war

The Prosecutor General’s Office has launched an investigation after the opposition Left Bloc filed a formal complaint characterizing US military transit via the Lajes Air Base in the Azores archipelago as a “gross violation of international law.”

Under its 1951 defense treaty with Portugal, the US is allowed to use Lajes without prior authorization in peacetime, but must ask for permission in wartime. Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel said Lisbon authorized the base’s use after US assurances that its operations would be ‘defensive, necessary and proportionate’, and would not target civilians.

👉 Situated in the mid-Atlantic and serving as an indispensable refueling hub connecting North America, Europe and Africa, Lajes was used heavily by the US during the ‘War on Terror’ as a staging and transit site for forces on route to Afghanistan and Iraq, and to facilitate the bombing of Libya and Syria.

In Iran, the base played a major role both during the leadup and active phases of the war, with Lisbon authorizing dozens of landings and overflights, and servicing US forces through the spring and summer.

➡️ Portugal okayed US operations even as other European countries, including Spain, Italy and France denied base access or blocked overflights. Some of these countries have subsequently been hit with suspected US or Israeli-backed unrest, diplomatic shaming, election meddling and defense contract cancellations.
