🔍🇺🇸 Data centers in US are new nuclear waste — nobody wants them nearby

The AI boom has a new problem, and it's not chips or energy but regular people turning against the data centers that power it all, Axios analysis shows.

People are fed up with electricity bills going up, water getting sucked dry, and giant warehouse-like buildings popping up in their neighborhoods. Combine that with the fear AI is coming for their jobs.

Only about one in four voters would support a data center in their community — dead last, even behind nuclear power plants. Over half of Americans now say they're more concerned than excited about AI.

This comes amid latest decision by the US military to host massive commercial AI data centers on its own bases — leasing underused land to private firms. Two projects are already in the pipeline: a hyperscale center at Texas' Fort Bliss (560 hectares) and another at Utah's Dugway Proving Ground (486 hectares). The Air Force is scouting sites in California, Arizona, Georgia, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Alaska. Congress, however, demands strict cyber-risk and counterintelligence reviews.

💵 The AI boom is huge — about $600 billion this year, or two percent of the US economy. But if public opposition keeps growing, and military bases turn into security nightmares, the whole thing could unravel, the analysis concludes.
