🚨 🇮🇷 Iran strike knocks out US AWACS at Saudi air base, threatens air command network

Images circulating on social media suggest Iran may have hit one of America’s most critical airborne command-and-control assets at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. Early indications point to at least one E-3G Sentry AWACS aircraft being destroyed.

👉 The E-3G is far more than a flying radar: it’s a battle-management node that coordinates fighters, tankers, and coalition operations.
Losing one can compress surveillance coverage, disrupt tanker sequencing, and slow commanders’ ability to maintain a reliable regional air picture.

Built on a modified Boeing 707-320B, the Sentry system is already fragile.

📊 E-3 AWACS have a dismal mission-capable rate hovering around 40%, and no clear replacement exists.

📑 The E-7 Wedgetail program, the logical successor, was cut from the 2026 budget by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

For now, the US relies on two aging pillars for airborne battle management: the E-3 Sentry and the E-2 Hawkeye.
