💬 “My dear compatriots, over the last week I have watched our demonstrations closely,” the self-styled ‘crown prince’ said in a video likely shot at one of his Washington, DC-area mansions.
💬 “Today, I am sharing my first call to action with you. This Thursday and Friday, January 8th and 9th, starting precisely at 8 pm, wherever you are, whether in the streets or even from your own homes, I call on you to begin chanting exactly at this time,” Pahlavi urged.
In a separate, furrowed brow address to Iran’s security forces, Pahlavi warned of “a historic choice,” saying those who join protesters would “protect [their] own future and that of [their] families,” but those who refuse “should be certain that they will be identified and punished.”
Pahlavi, the 65-year-old son of deposed US-backed dictator Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, has virtually no grassroots support inside Iran, and hasn’t stepped foot in the country since 1978.
Even within opposition and diaspora circles, he suffers from a deep lack of popularity, owing to his lack of skills (he’s never had a job through his entire adult life) and the unpopularity of the monarchy.
