BRICS cooperation seen as key to South Africa's energy development

Ahead of the Africa Energy Indaba 2026 in Cape Town, Brian Statham, former Executive Chairman of the South African National Energy Association (SANEA), emphasised that energy sovereignty and regional integration are central to Africa's long-term development.

He noted that the Indaba has grown into a major continental platform, bringing together representatives from 37 African countries to facilitate dialogue and practical cooperation across the energy sector.

Statham underscored the strategic importance of South Africa's engagement within #BRICS, highlighting the technological strengths of member states—including Brazil's progress in gas‑powered mobility, China's expansion of universal energy access, and Russia's advanced nuclear capabilities—as a foundation for deeper knowledge exchange and a more balanced, industrially aligned energy transition.
