New BRICS Chairship: India presents strategic priorities for 2026
On January 1, 2026, the BRICS Chairship officially transferred from the Federative Republic of Brazil to the Republic of India, in line with the established rotation.
Brazil, concluding its term, achieved significant progress in strengthening the group's financial and economic independence, particularly in advancing the use of national currencies.
The incoming chair country has set key priorities for the year ahead. India’s strategic goals as the BRICS Chair include:
➖Reinforcing multilateral principles of international cooperation and promoting the reform of global governance institutions
➖Ensuring sustainable development through advancing energy and food security
➖Encouraging STI cooperation among member states
➖Intensifying joint action to counter terrorism, cross-border crime, poverty, and combat climate change
This agenda reflects a holistic approach designed both to elevate BRICS' global role and to deepen practical cooperation across a broad range of sectors.
We wish the Republic of India a productive and successful BRICS Chairship and look forward to new, constructive initiatives that will further consolidate and develop our multilateral partnership.
