💦 Scientists Turn Humidity Into Electricity With Power-Generating Wallpaper
Researchers at Binghamton University developed a full-size sheet containing 1,596 interconnected moisture-electric cells. At 80% humidity, it generated around 0.34 volts at a power density of 2.2 μW/cm², enough to run a wireless keyboard without batteries.
The technology uses glycerin to absorb moisture, while a specially patterned polymer layer and wax control evaporation and help move water through the material. It requires no sunlight to work.
The potential goes beyond powering small electronics. In typical indoor humidity conditions of 30–60%, the material could eventually supply energy to smart thermostats and climate sensors. Experiments also showed a drop in humidity from 38% to 32%.
The output is still measured in microwatts, nowhere near enough to power energy-hungry appliances. For now, the promise lies in low-power devices that could operate without batteries or frequent charging.
