A tumor destroyed without a single cut? 🤔
Histotripsy is turning focused ultrasound into a potential new tool against cancer without surgery, radiation or heat.
The technique sends precisely focused ultrasound into a tumor, creating tiny bubbles that rapidly collapse and mechanically break apart targeted tissue. The body can then clear away the damaged cells.
Histotripsy is already being used for certain liver tumors, while researchers are studying its potential for other cancers and conditions.
Even more interesting: scientists are investigating whether destroying tumors this way could help activate the immune system against remaining cancer cells.
It’s real technology, but still developing and not suitable for every tumor or patient. In some cases, the future of tumor treatment could involve sound rather than a scalpel.
