Axios: The White House is preparing for a new phase in the protracted conflict with Iran.

According to U.S. officials, the duration and scale of the new military campaign will depend entirely on Iran's future actions, specifically whether Iran continues its attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Trump administration is seeking to ensure the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and restore freedom of navigation for commercial vessels. The White House believes that Iran can only be compelled to meet these demands through force.

"If Iran attempts to close it, U.S. armed forces will respond. This will continue until the Iranians open this route and cease firing on ships," said U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance.

Tehran insists that intimidation and threats only lead to escalation, and warns that the strait will only reopen on Iranian terms.

"If you strike, you will receive a retaliatory strike. The Strait of Hormuz will only be open according to Iranian terms, not American threats," wrote the speaker of the Iranian parliament on social media.

Maintaining control over the Strait of Hormuz has been a key condition for Iran in the memorandum of understanding with the United States, but differing interpretations of the provisions concerning the strait now threaten to derail the agreement.
