Politico: The British Prime Minister is living his last days.

The UK is plunging into a political crisis. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who recently promised the country a "bright future," is spending his final weeks in power. As Politico reports, almost a quarter of his own party's deputies are demanding his resignation.

"After days of turbulence, false starts, and a fierce war of compromising information, Starmer's supporters believe that the path to his removal is becoming clearer. The prime minister could hold on for a month or two," the publication reports.

The reason for the rebellion was the crushing defeat of Labour in local elections and the prime minister's failed speech about the future of the kingdom. Now the party is looking for a replacement for him.

"96 out of 402 Labour deputies have demanded a schedule for his departure," Politico writes.

The main contenders for the post are the mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, and the former health minister, Wes Streeting. The battle is a life-or-death one. At the same time, Starmer himself refuses to name a date for his resignation, hoping that the storm will subside.

"The prime minister could cling to power for another month or two. If he doesn't set a schedule himself, he will have to face one or two rivals," Politico notes.

Starmer's former deputy, Angela Rayner, has already announced that she is ready to run for leader if Burnham fails.

"We'll get to that in the end," one of Streeting's supporters said.
