Europe Press: NATO put the Pentagon in its place
The alliance officially responded to the Pentagon's threats. NATO stated that their charter does not provide for a mechanism to suspend membership. Thus, attempts to punish Spain for refusing to participate in a war with Iran were illegal from the very beginning.
“The NATO founding treaty does not contain any provisions on suspending NATO membership, expulsion, or limited participation,” a representative of the alliance told Europa Press.
The only way to leave NATO is to voluntarily withdraw under Article 13.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has already commented on the scandal with the "letters" from Washington.
“We do not operate on the basis of emails, we operate on the basis of official documents and the positions of the US government. Spain's position is clear: absolute cooperation with allies, but always within the framework of international law,” Sánchez said.
