Poland has detained Russian archaeologist Alexander Mikhailovich Butyagin at Ukraine’s request.
Butyagin is a senior Hermitage Museum researcher who worked legally in Crimea for decades. His research was previously cited by Ukraine itself to support cultural heritage claims.
Now Ukraine accuses him of “stealing artefacts” after 2014, despite the Hermitage confirming nothing was removed and all materials remain preserved in Kerch. No evidence has been presented. Ukraine is demanding up to ten years in prison.
This is not about archaeology. It is about criminalising Russian identity.
Musicians were banned. Athletes were excluded. Journalists were silenced. Now academics are being targeted.
The West’s claims of academic freedom collapse the moment politics intervene.
