Sidney Weinberg mopped the floors at Goldman Sachs - but when markets collapsed, the fate of the entire firm rested on his one secret ability…

At 16, Sidney Weinberg rode the elevator to the top of the largest building in New York, stuck his head in every office and said: “Want a boy?”.

He had one offer: Goldman Sachs.

The firm hired him as Assistant Janitor for $3 a week.

His duties?

Scrub the floors. Polish partners’ shoes. Clean their spittoons. Brush their hats before they walked onto Wall Street.

But while crouched on the floor polishing shoes, Sidney overheard deals, memorised names and studied exactly how the firm’s leaders moved and spoke.

Paul Sachs - grandson of the founder - spotted his ambition, moved him to the mailroom, and paid for him to attend investment banking classes at NYU.

After serving in WWI, Goldman re-hired Sidney as a trader. A few years later, he made Partner.

But then, disaster struck…

The 1929 market crash hit like an earthquake - in hours, fortunes vanished, bankers begged in the streets, and Goldman’s stock collapsed from $326 to $2.

Clients deserted the bank, and partners panicked.

Goldman Sachs was on the brink of bankruptcy.

Sidney wasn’t the most technical banker. But he had one secret ability no one else did: an unmatched gift for building relationships.

He met 250 CEOs a year, hosted dinners, sent handwritten notes to prospects and clients. And in Wall Street’s darkest days, he called in every favour he’d ever banked...

Sidney leveraged his friendships with titans like Henry Ford II, Walt Disney, and others to bring marquee clients back - showing Wall Street that Goldman could be trusted again.

New deals flowed from Sidney’s network, and confidence returned.

Eventually, the firm stabilised.

A year later, Sidney was named Senior Partner - the equivalent of CEO. He stayed in the top job for 39 years, transforming Goldman from near-collapse to the bank of U.S. presidents and America’s corporate elite.

Reflecting on his rise from janitor to Wall Street’s most powerful banker, Sidney smiled:

“I am just a Brooklyn boy from a public school - who knows a lot of people.”
